A couple of weeks ago, Bruce and I drove down to Manchester after school to get stuck in lots of traffic and eventually see “Weird Al” Yankovic.
The show at the Manchester O2 Apollo was the first opportunity to see Weird Al since the twins were born/very young. As Bruce enjoys his music as much as I do (possibly more) we thought it would be a good Christmas present.
One problem: it’s called “The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour.” This means that the setlist is all Al’s original songs, rather than his parodies. I did wonder if Bruce would be put off by this, but fortunately, he wasn’t.
This is probably in part because it was his first gig. Also, the band was incredibly tight, really good musicians. And Emo Philips as support act (still hilarious) got him in the mood to be entertained.
Incredibly we didn’t get home until 1.15am, setting off around 11.20pm. The trip back was largely uneventful except for incredibly thick fog between Knaresborough and just past Thirsk, which slowed us down considerably. Luckily Bruce was fast asleep on the back seat at this point.
While there, I bought Bruce a t-shirt and myself a hoodie, although in the photos Bruce is wearing the t-shirt his mum made. We also ate too many sweets, and failed to clear a big KFC bucket. I struggled to find anywhere selling coffee on the way home, which I solved by eating too many fruit pastilles…
Finally, here’s the end of the main show.
